An Example that Changes the World

An Example that Changes the World

Learning through example is a way by which human beings develop. A child, while crawling, looks up and observes the walking of those giants they know as parents. They have something that sounds different to the child, they perform an action that the child does not yet know, but which, for some reason, even intuitively, fascinates them.

Day after day, the child observes their surroundings until, at some point, they seem to recognize their own strength, seek balance, lean on something for support, and then stand up. The parents follow the process and provide the child with the best environment for them to learn to walk. Time passes, the child remains firm in their objective, supports themselves on a chair, on a sofa, and one fine day, gathers courage, lets go of their hands, and takes their first step.

It seems that the process of learning through example, so clearly noticed in childhood, perpetuates throughout life. An adult observes those around them and pays attention to conducts and ideas that resonate within them. Sometimes, they are captivated by someone who has something they seek, that awakens in them the desire to be like the other, to have what they have, to live as they live, to imitate their actions. And the human brain is good at this. Through “mirror neurons,” the observed action is simulated, making it possible to learn by example1. This raises a reflection: should one imitate the person who captivated them?

In this meditation, perhaps within each one arises the courage of that child who looked up, observed giants, let go, and took their first step. Perhaps it is possible to even recognize beyond the giants, to reach the stars, leave the galaxy, enter the vastness of the universe, be captivated by something that goes beyond what the eyes can capture, that is reached through feeling, and whose manifestation comes in an action that can transform the world, not just the individual one, but everyone’s. A purpose for which it’s worthwhile to move forward. An ideal recognized by a man who gave his life as an example that it is possible to be happy, as long as you reach out to others and help.

We are talking about Dr. Celso Charuri, conceiver and founder of PRÓ-VIDA. Someone who captivates and inspires thousands of people. Therefore, on June 15, participants of the Movement paid him homage for his birthday, celebrated on June 11, and imitated the gesture he left as the mark of the path towards building a Much Better World: giving.

Six donation ceremonies were held by the Centers for the Tithe PRÓ-VIDA in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Italy, and Portugal, in their respective countries. Thousands of items were delivered to 82 charitable institutions, in a gesture that is repeated not only on Dr. Celso’s birthday. Donations have been made for 44 years, showing the strength of the joining together of those who are united in walking for a common purpose.

Argentina

“The great solution is by union and composition, because the drop that makes up the ocean comes to have the strength of the ocean.” Daniel Moreno, representative of the Central del Diezmo de Argentina (Center for the Tithe of Argentina), explained that Dr. Celso showed that people build the environment in which they live. The donation benefited eight institutions in the country with the delivery of non-perishable food, construction materials, school supplies, computer equipment, medical items, furniture, among others.

Bolivia

“Through millennia-old knowledge from the East and the West, demonstrated by great minds, Dr. Celso began to train something that we all have here, which is the mind, which once developed, opens a window for us.” – Reynaldo Duarte, representative of the Central del Diezmo de Bolivia (Center for the Tithe of Bolivia). The donation benefited an institution in the country that serves the entire population of the city of Santa Cruz, with over 2 million inhabitants.

Brazil

“We do not do this to solve the problem of the institutions (…) because we know that this will not happen (…) the need will return. We do this to set an example (…) and maintain hope that yes, it is possible to build a much better world.” – Ariovaldo Aprikian, representative of the Central Geral do Dízimo (General Center for the Tithe) and its affiliates in Brazil. The donation benefited 60 institutions with the delivery of vehicles, as well as items for health, schools, industries, and vocational courses, musical instruments, materials for renovations and constructions, among others.

Chile

“More than money, these deposits* are filled with love. It is the fruit of work put at the service of those in need.” – Gabriel Nuñez, representative of the Central del Diezmo de Chile (Center for the Tithe of Chile). The donation benefited two institutions in the country with health, education, sensory rehabilitation items, among others.

*The deposits he refers to are optional, anonymous, voluntary, and entirely intended for the purchase of donation items.

Italy

“We work to build a much better world, a world where civilization finds the reason for existence in being and not in having.” – Simone Destro, representative of the Centrale delle Decime d’Italia (Center for the Tithe of Italy). The donation benefited nine institutions in the country and one in the Republic of Cape Verde, Africa. Vehicles and medical equipment, among other items, were delivered.

Portugal

“We find happiness by giving happiness.” – Januário Micelli, representative of the Central do Dízimo de Portugal (Center for the Tithe of Portugal). The donation benefited an institution in the country with the delivery of a vehicle.
