To Illuminate
To Illuminate
Illuminate is the word we wish to carry into the New Year, to engrave it in the hidden little corner which welcomes our thoughts, and keep it always alive as a perpetual memory. At a time when the energy crisis in some regions of the world makes light a scarce resource, we decided to praise it to observe its different manifestations. It can be hot or cold, present itself in shades of yellow or blue. It can become dazzling or be shy, and peek over the edge of a candle. It traces the contours of the Christmas tree or the streets at night, when the sleeping sun leaves us in the dark.
Weak or fiery light: as fire warms the body, the brightness exalts the thoughts. But if the light that comes from outside becomes scarce, it’s necessary to seek an alternative source. And in this eager search for an idea, it’s possible to look beyond and try to find it inside. We are able to transmit heat: our body can warm up and, when we are together, we perceive the rise in temperature in an environment. It’s all a matter of the energy which circulates freely in the human being.
Light in the eyes: in some people a glow is recognizable which animates and illuminates the time spent in their company. Who knows where it comes from, whatever the reasons that triggered such beauty. What counts is the possibility: we can illuminate. We may call it inner peace, balance, serenity, give it a thousand different names; we can even use the word happiness to describe the light that comes from within. Whatever the reason, each one finds their own, just knowing that it’s possible.
Living with these ideas is already a first step towards finding the light. Everyday life is punctuated by intervals of light and shadow – because darkness exists – but focusing on moments of light leaves room for the brightness to manifest itself.
The possibilities for our being are infinite and demand a little effort from us (we have to admit!). But, no matter how small it seems, even if minuscule, sometimes tenuous and indecisive, the light always accompanies us. Let’s learn to illuminate. Let’s cultivate the courage to let our light out, aware that it can illuminate not only our path, but also that of those we will meet along the way.
